Words have Power

Your words have power. Once you speak a thing, you give it form. It becomes a force. Only you know the intent behind those words.

There is a growing movement of “self-help” gurus promising to help guide you to your goals. They know the power of words. The power of positive self-talk. But it takes more than uplifting speeches to guide you to your goals. All the expensive ‘I am great’ phrasing in the world will not help you if your intention is wrong.

It’s time to sit down and reflect on your goals. Is your goal simply to become rich? To become powerful, or envied? Is it to become popular, or famous? In other words, is it coming from an ‘I’ centered place? It is easy to become the center of our own Universe – after all, that is where we physically live.

If you’ve spent money on those self-affirmation plans and have found them lacking or not helpful, perhaps it’s time to reflect on the goals and the place they come from. It is possible to have an altruistic goal but with wrong intention. Example: you want to end world hunger (altruistic) because you want people to praise you for it (not so altruistic). Great goal, wrong intention.

Speaking from a place of wrong intention is still powerful but be mindful that it may not provide the results you need, and in some cases you may not even want.

We are generally taught to lay out our goals, and to create the steps that lead up to achieving our goals. We write out neat little timelines with our bullet points, highlight our calendars with due dates and begin building the life we think we want. Almost always, the top item missing from our little project calendars is time for reflection on our intention.

Take time today to reflect on the goals you have set for yourself. Ask if it is something that will serve you, or others. Does it hold up to time? If it is an older goal, ask yourself if you still feel the same. Are you working to complete your goal simply because it exists? Or do you still have the same passion, the same intention, as when you began.

Give yourself permission to leave those goals that no longer make sense. Remember, you spoke the words, you gave that goal a power. Make certain it is not something that holds a power over you. Give yourself permission to speak new words to become the being that you are meant to be.

Blessings!
